Bowen Technique Origins
The Original Bowen Technique is a holistic form of bodywork developed by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It is a soft tissue, hands-on body therapy that stimulates the nervous system encouraging relaxation and holistic healing. Bowtech as it is known in Australia, or Bowenwork or Bowen Therapy as it is known here in the States, utilizes subtle inputs to the body (known as moves), stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly. This kind of gentle therapy can provide relief for many types of injuries, pain, and other health issues. Because Bowenwork is gentle and non-invasive, it is an appropriate therapy for people of all ages and in any degree of health.
The health issues addressed can be both acute and chronic conditions. Practitioners working on clients with acute injuries may effectively apply the work to address only the traumatized areas. Clients with chronic conditions that have developed dysfunction in the muscles and compromised alignment and posture will see the benefit of a whole-body approach for optimal recovery. The body is not manipulated or forced to make a change which can be uncomfortable for those already suffering from pain and discomfort. The moves performed by the practitioner are located at specific points on the body (on muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves) and facilitate the body's own innate healing ability, with minimal intervention, restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
How It Works
The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. It is common today to be caught in a sympathetic nervous system loop. We find ourselves in a high-stress state of fight or flight, making it very difficult for our bodies to let go and fully relax. When Bowenwork is performed, the client often reaches a state of deep relaxation, sometimes falling asleep on the table. Loud peristalsis can be heard as another sign of deep relaxation, while the body naturally switches to a parasympathetic nervous system state, allowing for rest and repair. This is where healing can be most effectively achieved. Though Bowenwork is a gentle and subtle therapy, the body will continue to respond to the stimulus over several days following treatment. Because of this, other forms of manipulative therapies are discouraged for up to five days so as to not interfere with the benefit of the work.
